إِلىto اللَهِGod أَشكوI complain طَوعَsubmission نَفسِيَmy soul لِلهَوىto desire
وَإِسرافَهاand its excesses فيin غَيِّهاits waywardness وَعُيوبهاand its faults
To God I complain of my soul's submission to desire,
and its excesses in its waywardness, and its faults.
دَعَتنيit called me إِلىto ماwhat تَشتَهيit desires فَأَجَبتُهاso I answered it
فَضاعَso was lost نَصيبيmy share فيin طِلابيmy pursuit of نَصيبهاits share
It called me to what it desires, so I answered it.
So my share was lost as I pursued its share.
إِذاwhen سُقتُهاI drove it لِلصالِحاتِtoward good deeds تَقَعَّسَتit hung back
وَدَبَّتand it crept عَلىwith كُرهٍreluctance إِلَيهاtoward them دَبيبَهاits crawling pace
When I drive it toward good deeds, it hangs back,
and creeps reluctantly toward them at its crawling pace.
وَتَشتَدُّand it races نَحوَtoward الموبِقاتِruinous sins نَشيطَةًeagerly
إِذاif فاوَقَتهاvied with it الريحُthe wind فاقَتit outstripped هُبوبَهاits gusts
And it races eagerly toward ruinous sins:
were the wind to race it, it would outstrip its gusts.
وَماand not هِيَit إِلّاexcept كَالفَراشَةِlike a moth إِنَّهاindeed, it
تَرىit sees الناسَpeople ناراًas fire ثُمَّthen تُصلىit is scorched by لَهيبَهاits blaze
And it is just like a moth; indeed, it
sees people as fire, then is scorched by its blaze.
