أَلاbehold أَنّيthat I am خَليلُكِyour beloved ياO حُوَيرىHuwayra
أَلا أَنّي خَليلُكِ يا حُوَيرى
وَمَبسَمِكِby your smiling mouth المُبَرِّدِcooling لِلغَليلِfor burning thirst
وَمَبسَمِكِ المُبَرِّدِ لِلغَليلِ
Behold, I am your beloved, O Huwayra,
O Houreyrah, I am your friend
by your smiling mouth that cools burning thirst.
And your refreshing smile cools the fevered brow
فَقوليso say لِلنّحاةِto the grammarians (those seeking) حِمايَmy sanctuary عَنهُaway from it
فَقولي لِلنّحاةِ حِمايَ عَنهُ
دَعواleave بَينَbetween المُبَرِّدِthe cooler (al-Mubarrid) وَالخَليلِand the beloved (al-Khalil)
دَعوا بَينَ المُبَرِّدِ وَالخَليلِ
So tell the grammarians seeking my sanctuary: keep away from it;
So tell the grammarians to leave us be
leave the cooler (al-Mubarrid) and the beloved (al-Khalil) to each other.
Let there be peace between Mubarrad and Khalil
