قدonce كانwas شعرُكَyour poetry صالحاًgood
قد كان شعرُكَ صالحاً
إذwhen كنتَyou used to تُسْنِدُهattribute it
إذ كنتَ تُسْنِدُه
Your poetry was once good
Your poetry was once decent
when you used to attribute it.
When you had a cause to support it
والآنand now غيّرهُhas changed it الزماtime (beginning)
والآن غيّرهُ الزما
نُtime (completion) وتلكَand that علّةُthe cause of غيريmy changes
نُ وتلكَ علّةُ غيري
And now it has been changed by ti-
But time has now changed it
me; and that is the cause of my changes.
And that is another's fault, not mine
ماas long as دامَit remains فيin الوجوexistence (beginning)
ما دامَ في الوجو
دِexistence (completion) فلستَso you do not تخشىfear فقدَthe loss of خَيْرِgood
دِ فلستَ تخشى فقدَ خَيْرِ
As long as it remains in exis-
As long as you exist
tence, you need not fear the loss of good.
You need not fear loss of talent
سيرُدُّwill bring low منكfrom you الدهرُtime يوone day (beginning)
سيرُدُّ منك الدهرُ يو
ماًone day (completion) وهوand it أشعرُa greater poet منthan زُهَيْرِZuhayr
ماً وهو أشعرُ من زُهَيْرِ
Time will bring you low one
One day life will give back to you
day—and it is a greater poet than Zuhayr.
A day when you are a greater poet than Zuhair
