أرسلتَ لي سطرين قد جَمعا

أرسلتَ لي سطرين قد جَمعا

حُمقاً يحرّم عندك البُقْيا

حُمقاً يحرّم عندك البُقْيا

You sent me two lines that together contained

You sent me two lines that gathered

Folly that makes mercy toward you forbidden.

Foolishness that forbids you from seeing clearly

وكسَوْتني خِلَعَ المحال على

وكسَوْتني خِلَعَ المحال على

أني كسوتُك مَلبسَ العُليا

أني كسوتُك مَلبسَ العُليا

And you clothed me in robes of absurdity, although

And you clothed me in impossible attire

I clothed you in the garment of eminence.

As if I had clothed you in the highest garb

فعدِمْتُها من رقعةٍ وردَتْ

فعدِمْتُها من رقعةٍ وردَتْ

ولو أنها هي رقعةُ الدُنيا

ولو أنها هي رقعةُ الدُنيا

So may I be rid of that note that arrived,

So I got rid of it like a patch and it went away

Even if it were the very expanse of the world.

Even if it was the patch of the whole world
