You dwell nearby, yet reaching you is far.

So your loving friend, ever keeping ties, breaks them off.

And you, and the heart that you have filled,

are surely like a heart enclosed by ribs.

I was kept away, but your beauties were not hidden,

from which, O Imam, spring drew its finery.

And you were wasted in safekeeping, and so were lost; just so

powdered musk is wasted while giving off fragrance.

And you are but the keen sword, keeping to its sheath,

to be drawn in a hand: when it delights, it terrifies.

Darkness and remoteness are ordained for the full moon,

as are its customary rising and withdrawal.

Nor is it strange for pearls to lie in their shells,

when the crown sinks beneath them, lofty though it is.

The vine's purest wine is kept in a jar for a time,

and a libertine strips the seal from its mouth.

Its calyxes will be split open to reveal wondrous blossom,

for that is nothing new in God's handiwork.

And darkness will unveil a radiant dawn,

especially now that the time has come for it to rise.

I seem to see it, O son of the noble, raiding,

with free grazing across those dwelling grounds.

where slender spears make the land look to you like the sea,

and swords, and gleaming helmets, and armor.

and horsemen of war, for whom the far-off is not

far, nor the high and lofty too high.

Do not marvel at that, for I declare:

even in the deaf month, you hear.
