ضاءَshone ليلُthe night of الخطوبِcalamities منكَfrom you بفَجْرِهْwith its dawn
ووصالُand reunion with السّرورِjoy صاحَcried out بَهجْرهْof its abandonment
Through you, the night of calamities shone with its dawn.
The night's sorrows shone with your dawn,
And reunion with joy proclaimed its departure.
And the joy of union cried at its separation.
فاحتكِمْso rule at will فيin النَّعيمbliss فالبؤسُfor misery قَدْindeed ماdied (first part)
تَdied (completion) علىupon رَغْمِspite of أَنْفِهِits nose تَحْتَbeneath حِجْرِهْits restraint
So rule at will in bliss, for misery has
So take pleasure in bliss - for misery, though
died, against its will, beneath its restraint.
It chafe, is under your control.
ودّwished جسمِيmy body لوif only كانَhad been حُمِّلَmade to bear منهُfrom him
ثِقْلَthe weight of آلامِهِhis pains وفُزْتُand I won بأَجْرهْwith its reward
My body wished it had been made to bear, in his stead,
If my body were laden with all its pains,
the weight of his pains, and that I had won its reward.
I would still profit from its reward.
إِنماonly السعدُgood fortune خادِمٌa servant لكfor you يجريruns
بينbetween إِغرَاءِthe urging of لفظِa word from فِيكyour mouth وزَجْرهْand its rebuke
Good fortune is only your servant, running
For fortune but serves you, running
between the urging of a word from your mouth and its rebuke.
Between the pull of your words and their restraint.
والزمانُand time المسيءُthe wrongdoer عبدُكَyour slave فاغفِرْso forgive
وعلىand according to رَسْمِهِits customary way الجميلِthe gracious فأَجْرِهْso make it run
And time, the wrongdoer, is your slave; so forgive it,
Time, though cruel, is your slave - so forgive it,
and let it run according to its gracious custom.
And reward it for its beautiful design.
فالسّقامُfor the sickness الذيwhich أَنالَكَafflicted you ظِلُّa shadow
سُجِّرَتْwas stoked نارُهُits fire بجاحِمِwith the blaze of جَمْرِهْits embers
For the sickness that afflicted you is a shadow
The sickness that struck you is but
whose fire was stoked with its blazing embers.
A fire whose embers your forbearance has banked.
فاحَوِso gather طِيبَthe sweetness of القريضِverse ياO حافِظَḤāfiẓ (guardian of) الدّيthe faith (first part of al-Dīn)
نِthe faith (completion of al-Dīn) بمُقْذِعِwith the vileness of هُجْرهْits abusive speech
So take in the sweetness of verse, O Ḥāfiẓ al-Dīn,
So perfume the ode, O Keeper of the Faith,
together with its foul, abusive speech.
With your graceful acceptance, not crude rejection.
