They propped it up with spears from the qudd (striped cloth)
And unsheathed them as broad blades from eyelids.
And wiped tears from the eyelids with sifaḥ (handkerchiefs)

What a state—it turned away from peace,
What a state of peace it had
Becoming combat, though there was no combat!
Which turned into tribulation without any effort

Indeed, they have riddled the hearts with wounds!
When they wounded the hearts with wounds

Did you lose hope or lay down your weapons?

Tell those tenths of you that they divided:
Tell your tenth shares which they divided
They cast lots over you with eyes for arrows.
They drank from you with glances that stabbed

Alas, in a stance that makes one wish for death before
He had died before it, and so found rest!
So as to rest, not live

Where one fears the liṯm (mouth) will string pearls
There, or an embrace will knot a sash.
Or the ināq (embrace) will tie a cloak

The mounts are wild due to separation
There, early departure urges evening departure onward.
Dawn among them hurries the spirits

The wings of resolve embrace gazelles
Fearing no guilt in the blood of lions.
Whose blood stains no wings

يجتنيها ثنائِياً وانتزاحا
It invents sins against the yearning lover,
He collects sins against the beloved
Reaping them twofold [reading uncertain], and in estrangement.
Gathering them two by two, moving aside

If his tear refuses consolation, say he distracted himself
Or if they come, they say: "That man has revealed the secret."
Or came, it's said, at dawn to confess

No shame on one who says passion's shameful
"May the Creator smite those lovely faces!"
May the Creator kill the salty faces!

They forbade me the beloved though he was near
They denied me sleep, though it had been permitted.
Denied me the wine though it was permitted

The places of hunting moved away from me
And, but for Ali, would have shown me rejection.
Showing me - were it not for ʿAlī - overthrown

He was earnest in his hand's bounty, and went to the utmost,
He was serious in his open-handedness and went too far
So we feared it might be a jest.
We feared it was a joke

But for him, I would have forgotten generosity.
Without him, I'd have forgotten generosity

His prestige pairs with his wealth, yet he is unmatched,
His status makes up for his wealth, so he's a lute string
Inviting us to choose between his two capacities.
We must pluck as his states suggest

They found the paths of praise wide open.

A steed of resolve, straining high to attain it.
A serious eye to attain them, ambitious

His intellect beholds, as refreshment and wine.
