1. هم يعذلوا من يسمع

    من كلام من عدّاله

    They reproach; who listens

    to words from his reproachers?

  2. أنا شيطانُ عِشقي

    في المحبةِ مارِدْ

    I am the devil of my passion,

    a rebel in love.

  3. وعَذولي يضربُ

    في حديدٍ بارِدْ

    And my reproacher strikes

    at cold iron.

  4. وليس يَردي زاهِدْ

    وليس يُرْدي عائدْ

    And no ascetic casts me down,

    and no visitor brings me down.

  5. خلقَ اللهُ الإنسانْ

    وخلقَ أعمالَهْ

    God created man,

    and created his deeds.

  6. من عذولٍ ليس يسمعْ

    من عذولٍ ليس يعقِلْ

    He hears nothing from a reproacher;

    he understands nothing from a reproacher.

  7. وعَذولي المسكينْ

    في المحبّةِ جاهِلْ

    And my poor reproacher

    is ignorant of love.

  8. نام في بالِه

    أني بكلامِه أعمَلْ

    In his mind slept the thought

    that I would act on his words.

  9. وإني ليسَ أعمَلْ

    بما يقومُ في بالِه

    And I do not act

    on what arises in his mind.

  10. إني لأعْشَقُ أن من

    لا يَهوى ويَعشَقْ

    I do indeed love this: whoever

    neither desires nor loves

  11. الجملُ حُسينٌ يَسكُتْ

    والحِمارُ حُسَيْنٌ ينطِقْ

    is the camel Husayn when silent,

    and the donkey Husayn when speaking.

  12. واللهِ إني صادقٌ

    ولقد قلتُ الحَقْ

    By God, I am truthful,

    and indeed I have spoken the truth.

  13. وكثيراً من قَبلي

    مثلُ قوْلي قالوا

    And many before me

    have spoken words like mine.
