بدورُ الحيّ مالتْ للأفولِ
فلاso do not تسألْask عنabout الحيّthe living man القتيلِslain
فلا تسألْ عن الحيّ القتيلِ
The clan's full moons have inclined toward setting;
The stars of the living inclined towards sunset,
So do not ask about the living man slain.
So ask not about the dead star.

وسار فؤادُه بين الحمولِ
Some part of his inner self remained by the dwellings,
He dwelt in the abodes with conscience,
While his heart traveled among the laden camels.
And his heart marched among the burdens.

Were it not for love, you would not see my body
Were it not for love, you would not have seen my body
In their dwelling-place, wasted amid desolation.
In their lands, toiling in toil.

Did the lovers know that my heart
On the morning of parting, announced its departure?
At dawn of separation, bid farewell?

And did the flirts know that my eyelid
Sleeps so little through the long night?
Short of sleep in the long night?

In those domed tents lies the cure for my longing,
In those domes is cure for my love,
Yet there is no way to reach it.
But no way is there to it.

Had fidelity been ordained for beautiful women,
If loyalty was prescribed on the flirts,
I would not have become a man with an ailing body.
I would not be one with a frail body.

If I burn, it is from the sighs of my longing;
So if I burn, it's from sighs of passion,
And if I drown, it is from my streaming tears.
And if I drown, it's in my pouring tears.

I yearned for the Euphrates, and was stirred by
I thrilled for Euphrates, and I craved
Doves that never tire of cooing.
The doves that never cease their coos.

May time bring me close to him,
And grant my wish just as I desire it.
And give me what I desire, my wish.

So the garden of life has turned yellow,
The duties of life turned yellow,
And the branch of pleasure has bowed toward withering.
And the branch of joy inclined to wither.

And if the withholding woman would favor us
If the miserly one helped us a bit,
With a phantom of hers that visits by night and draws near,
With a phantom that comes and goes.

I would quench my burning thirst from its mouth
I would rinse my mouth with its rain,
And slake my craving from its lips.
And drain my illness from its pillows.

And the narcissus of that kohl-dark eye.
And the narcissus of that kohl-lined eye.

A thirst within me has taken command of my heart,
I have a thirst controlling my heart,
To sip the sweet-flowing saliva.
To the drink from the pouring freshet.

And Su'ad, despite the distance, was recalled to me by
The meadow breeze with fragrant blow
The garden breeze, this easterly wind.
Reminded me of days of bliss and union.

I see her not inclined to approach,
Nor does my heart turn to wailing.
Nor is my heart inclined to lament.

Her charm controls every heart,
As the mighty rules the lowly.
As the mighty controls the lowly.

If she dons the robes of beauty one day,
If she wears the gown of beauty one day,
Then my garments are the robes of wasting.
My clothes are the gown of mourning.

When tyrants crowded around me,
I made the wind my messenger toward you.
I made the wind my messenger to you.

How much joy I have in intimacy!
And how much acceptance I find in the east wind!
How much acceptance I have in union!

Perhaps the caravan will carry me to you,
Keeping up their headlong pace and brisk trot.
Continuing arrogance and acrimony.

Oh times that passed with me
And on those landmarks and ruined dwellings.
From those landmarks and hills.

Behold, I have gained victory through the house of Nasr,
Lo! I was victorious with every victory,
So I fear no aggressor's overreach.
So I fear not prolonging of rectangles.

Rain clouds in times of want, horsemen in war,
Clouds of crisis, steeds of war,
Full moons in darkness, lions of the thicket.
Dens of darkness, lions of the jungle.

His resolve, like their cauldrons, is lofty,
They have a care like their lofty cauldrons,
And his cheerfulness is like their fine conduct.
And good like their fine deeds.

When they attend to the call, who of them
The ruined, barren edifice of generosity is rebuilt.
Is hosted by the generous, hospitable man?

When they ride, the allies gathering
Scatters, leaving men wounded or slain.
Scatter from the wounded or the killed.

When they cry for help defending a wrong,
You see the deeds of the polished sword.
You see the swords' kin unsheathed.

If you inflict them one day with their like,
Sa'dan fodder is not like noxious pasture.
Then misfortune is not like plentiful grazing.

Saladin, you lived alongside glory,
That leaves your enemy spending the night in obscurity.
Where your enemy sleeps in languor.

When the turns of time draw a keen sword,
When turns of fate grow angry,
The keen blade of your resolve turns it back with notches in its blade.
Your angry resolve restrains it with neighing.

And on a day when those who stumble find
A day in which there is no glory for the feeble,
Neither one to spare them there nor a place to rest,
Some find death, and some find life.

On eagles among the fleetest horses.
On racers faster than horses.

The lances of war rose like thickets,
Its rivers flowing as gleaming blades.
Its streams flowed with white spear-tips.

Its depths rose like clouds, and flashed
The lightning of bright swords amid the thunder of neighing.
The lightning of blades in the horses' neighing.

The enemies fled, falling short
That day of the feats of one with far-reaching prowess,
Of the deeds of the long-armed.

Some girded with swords,
Or wearing anklets of fetters.
Others fleeing to the shackled horses.

You were more eminent than those to whom
On battle's morning, the banners of the vanguard.
The banners of troops were tied the morning after war.

To you came the mounts of poetry, winding
The broad expanses of rugged ground and plains.
Through the expanses of sadness and plains.

Like flowers of a meadow dragged over them
The trailing hems of the moist wind's gauzy robes.
Are the trailing skirts of the gentle wind.

Minds are humbled by it, and no wonder,
Thus does wine play with minds.
Like wine plays with minds.

May you accept it clad in welcome.
