    She has turned away from aversion;

so pronounce whatever judgment you will, my reproacher.

A graceful maiden has sickened healthy bodies

with ailing eyelids, full of languor.

In love she gathered the armies of my sleeplessness,

just as she parted my sleep-closed eyelids.

Her saliva is my wine, and on her two cheeks

is a garden for me surpassing all gardens.

She has an eye—no eye has seen anything lovelier

than the blackness it holds within whiteness.

Her eyelids slew me in my love for her,

despite my might, like al-Barrāḍ's murderous stroke.

Every sword grows blunt, except the swords

unsheathed against me from keen glances.

And a gazelle—my passion has ruled against me:

in loving him, I must forgo demanding my due from him.

I am content with my abasement and submission

in loving him—so is he content, I wonder?

He has cheek-down creeping across the roses of his cheeks

    gently, like a tongue-flicking snake.

My love for him is widely known; my patience

in abstaining from loving him, however, is not widely known.

Friend, leave aversion behind; travel through the deserts,

and roam abroad like al-Ḥārith ibn Muḍāḍ.

Travel with resolve in pursuit of lofty honors,

on the backs of lean, travel-worn mounts.

    فظِ تظفَرْ بسائِرِ الأغراضِ

    And make for the gate of the Imam, our master al-Ḥāfiẓ;

you will attain all your aims.

Noble in lineage and pure in birth

among mankind, and pure in honor.

He was fashioned from the pure substance of noble virtues,

while mankind's noble men are mere accidents.

He rises above the two Simāk stars and the Eagle,

just as his adversary sinks low.

He gives full-grown camels; every generous man

but him is miserly with a yearling she-camel.

No one is displeased with him for all time,

just as his honor is pleased with him.

Never have supplicants or their requests been left in need

by the bounty of his overflowing right hand.

He judges his own largesse with injustice,

yet among mankind he judges with justice.

Of mighty glory and unassailable power,

    abundant gifts and broad hands.

Come, thirsty one, to the pools of his bounty,

and drink your fill from them; leave all other pools.

Since I have known him, he has always been open-handed,

while all others remain forever tight-fisted.

O al-Ḥāfiẓ, the Imam for whom we would sacrifice ourselves,

you have given generously, so noble virtues are pleased with you.

Take this virgin poem: I have clothed her in a robe of glory—

what an ample robe of eminence!

So she came to sneer at the poetry of al-Maʿarrī,

and at Mihyār and al-Sharīf al-Bayāḍī.

So live on and stay safe as long as birds sing in the thickets

and the breeze stirs the gardens' blossoms.
