    لِمِ فَهْوَ المُهَدَّبُ المأْمولُ

    Say to the pride of the imams, the eminent scholar—

    for he is refined, the one in whom hopes are placed;

    and to him who has no equal—do

    the rain, the sun, and the sword have an equal?

    O you, miserly with your honor, yet generous

    with your bounty—you are the generous miser.

    You are the one upon whom, of nobility,

    and pride and exalted rank, there rests a crown.

    And the imam, whose suns of lofty merit

    never set throughout all time.

    A pen in your hands, O mine of letters,

    has turned back the sword, though it is blunt.

    أَخرسٌ ناطقٌ حقيرٌ جليلُ

    Bowing, prostrating; deaf, yet keen of hearing;

    mute, yet speaking; lowly, yet majestic;

    قائلٌ فاعلٌ قصيرٌ طويلُ

    on foot, yet a horseman; still, yet ever moving;

    speaking, acting; short, yet long.

    A pen that sickens the healthy with what it spits

    from its saliva—and the ailing recover.

    It leaves its own mark on the sheet, like one traced

    in musk upon a delicate, smooth cheek.

    Its head is like a spearpoint, but its other end

    is a polished sword that cleaves calamities.

    It has no peer; and you, in God's cause,

    have no peer—the proof of that is established.

    So remain a helping hand to those who seek you, as long as

    a bird sings and its cooing endures.
