متعتّبٌ من غيرِ ما سببِ

راضٍ به مسٌّ من الغضبِ

راضٍ به مسٌّ من الغضبِ

Reproachful for no reason,

Reproaching me for no reason at all

Contented, yet touched by anger.

Though happy with me, harsh out of anger

أشْمتّ بي من لا خلاقَ له

أشْمتّ بي من لا خلاقَ له

وقدحْتَ بين الجلدِ والعصَبِ

وقدحْتَ بين الجلدِ والعصَبِ

You made one devoid of virtue gloat over me,

Mocking me, you who have no ethics

And struck sparks between skin and sinew.

Attacking between skin and nerve

فاحبسْ لساني عن معايبِهمْ

فاحبسْ لساني عن معايبِهمْ

لا تولعنّ النارَ بالحطَبِ

لا تولعنّ النارَ بالحطَبِ

So keep my tongue from speaking of their faults;

So restrain my tongue from blaming them

Do not stoke the fire with firewood.

Do not stoke the fire with kindling

أرسلتَني والريحُ في طلَقٍ

أرسلتَني والريحُ في طلَقٍ

لكنها خابَتْ ولم أخِبِ

لكنها خابَتْ ولم أخِبِ

You sent me forth while the wind was racing,

You sent me off as the wind blew free

But it failed, and I did not.

Yet it failed, and I did not fail
