Praise be to God: I have no wealth.

I have acquired neither silver nor gold.

So my back is light without it, and the trouble

of my burden is slight; no one has any interest in me.

Whoever sees me has full knowledge of what

is in the house—this is the wonder.

The full moon is my evening lamp, and if

I sleep at night, my pillow is wood.

And my tent is a tent without poles,

and it has neither a dome nor a guy rope.

So I do not fear thieves, whether they dwell

in my home as long as I live, or depart.

And I have come to the imam Ahmad, who

has wisdom, distinction, and noble standing.

My means of approach is his hand’s bounty, for he

desires to bestow generosity upon mankind.

    ثمّ تعالى فدونه الشُهُبُ

    He gave generously—the clouds fall short of his bounty;

then rose aloft, and the shooting stars are beneath him.

The robe of praise is too short for him, and upon

anyone else, when hope is lost, it trails.

He has qualities never united in any man

other than him; truly, such are the ranks of eminence.

Our praise revolved around them, so they came

to seem, by God, like a pivot.

I praised him truthfully; and if the

people ever praise another, they have lied.

He has a hand that pours out bounty, just as

the clouds pour their water onto the earth.

The palms of men’s hands have indeed been filled

by him, and books with his glorious deeds.

O guardian who has preserved the

sacred law, yours are knowledge, and then literary refinement.

May you remain in excellence always, forever,

for you are the father of excellence as long as you live.
