Khulayf
أَظْهَرَhas exposed الشعرُpoetry فيin يَدَيْكَyour two hands اللُّصوصاthe thieves
O prince of intelligence, O son of Khulayf,
O Prince of wit, O Ibn Khulayf's son
In your hands, poetry has exposed the thieves.
Poetry has revealed its thieves in your hands
فاقتطِعْso appropriate عَمْلَةَwork الأَدِيبِthe man of letters عُمَوماًas a whole
وأَضِفْهاand add it إِلىto عُلاَكَyour glory خُصُوصَاspecifically
So appropriate the man of letters’ work as a whole,
So take the poet's coin as your due
And add it specifically to your glory.
And add it specially to your glory
فَهْيَfor it إِنْif صَحَّis sound نَظْمُهَاits composition بِكَfor you أَحْرَىmore fitting
لاmay … not أَصابَfind الثناءُpraise عنكَaway from you مَحِيصاa way of escape
For, if its composition is sound, it is more fitting for you—
For if its verse is rendered right by you
May praise find no escape from you.
Praise cannot but to you redound, timelessly
