يا حافظاً تشهدُ أخلاقُه

يا حافظاً تشهدُ أخلاقُه

بأنه قد طابَ أعراقا

بأنه قد طابَ أعراقا

O Hafiz, whose character bears witness

O witness of his morals

that he is of noble lineage,

That his lineage is pure

ومن غدا ثانيَ شمسِ الضُحى

ومن غدا ثانيَ شمسِ الضُحى

عُلوّ مقدارٍ وإشراقا

عُلوّ مقدارٍ وإشراقا

and you who became a second morning sun

And tomorrow at dawn’s sun

in lofty stature and radiance.

With grandeur and radiance arises

إن فُقْتَ أهلَ الأرضِ عِلماً فقد

إن فُقْتَ أهلَ الأرضِ عِلماً فقد

أنفقتَ فيه العُمرَ إنفاقا

أنفقتَ فيه العُمرَ إنفاقا

If you have surpassed the earth's people in knowledge, then

If you surpass people in knowledge

you have indeed spent your lifetime on it.

You’ve spent a lifetime acquiring it

وجدْتَ جودَ الغيثِ لما انْبرى

وجدْتَ جودَ الغيثِ لما انْبرى

يُلحُّ إرعاداً وإبراقا

يُلحُّ إرعاداً وإبراقا

And you gave as generously as the rain when it began

You found the rain’s generosity when it

to thunder and flash insistently.

Thundered and flashed intensely

قد جمُدَ الجاري وعَيشي كما

قد جمُدَ الجاري وعَيشي كما

تراه يا مولاي قد ضاقا

تراه يا مولاي قد ضاقا

The flow of income has frozen, and my livelihood, as

My provisions have dried up

you see, my lord, has grown straitened.

As you see, my Lord, they’ve shrunk

فجُدْ بتعجيلكَ لي بعضَه

فجُدْ بتعجيلكَ لي بعضَه

أنْفِقُه في القوتِ إنفاقا

أنْفِقُه في القوتِ إنفاقا

So be generous by advancing me part of it;

So be quick to provide me some

I shall spend it on sustenance.

That I may spend on food

لقد غدا غُصْني سليباً فهل

لقد غدا غُصْني سليباً فهل

تُلبِسُه جدواكَ أوراقا

تُلبِسُه جدواكَ أوراقا

My branch has indeed become stripped bare; so will

My branch has withered

your bounty clothe it in leaves?

Will your generosity clothe it in leaves?
