My resolve, my prudence, and the keen sword

have pledged themselves to a true flash.

If my rise has been checked in a calamity,

how many a flight, how many a swoop

are mine on a wing that is not broken!

Time past has already seen in me

a wildness that baffled the tamers.

It is another who is angry yet acquiescent,

whom delay distracts from demanding his due.

    Did not al-Harith al-Mudadi suffer

from a pittance that al-Barrad's ambition spurned?

    So the two joined the long to the broad;

they travel by night, worn-out men on worn-out mounts.

Butter cannot be had without churning,

and bodies exist only for honor.

What keeps the lions settled in the thickets?

What comparison is there between stud camels and yearlings?

Arrows would find their targets hard to reach

if the bowstring's twang had not struck them.

How often firmness has come from a shaking loose,

and what once met obstruction has spread abroad!

Ease up, for I am not one to bow low.

    I courted bright, languid eyes,

of black that gleams within white.

Have you not seen the gardens' loveliness?

From it I pledged to Abu al-Fayyad—

the master, who holds mastery by mutual consent—

a sick man's servitude, never to expire.

He strides proudly in his ample robe,

he drinks deep of his copious, sweet-flowing water,

he mounts the back of his well-trained steed,

he unites the gardens and the pools.

How noble a binder and unbinder he is,

with firm judgment and with forbearance,

rooting out the illnesses time contains.

From him comes a doom that judges the nights.

He requited me—and what a requital!

So I received from him the finest recompense.

How many a stain of grief fades in his radiance!

He drew against it a sword with a keen edge,

    then matched sweetness with sourness,

as you brought the two blades of shears together:

    a harmony arising from opposition.

So tell the seeker of his overflowing bounty:

Sit still: it has come galloping to you,

and needs no one to urge it on.

An allotted share that outstrips the allotter,

by which the laggard is distinguished from the runners.

It strikes the foes with broad shafts from him,

to wrench away the crisis's biting gate.

He shoots feathered arrows and featherless shafts.

Everyone who rises finds you mighty in assault.

He resolutely guards against every rebel.

And when the foes are a fire of scorching heat,

he counts them among the illnesses.

May what he has bound never revert to unraveling,

nor his expansiveness turn to contraction.

Amen—in the future as in the past.
