If this pen of mine had the power of my words,
If only my pen were strong, my words potent,
my hand would have served you in place of my mouth's speech.
My hand would tire of speaking for my mouth.
وكنتand you would have been تُبْصِرُseeing كُلَّevery مُنْسكِبٍoutpouring

And you would have seen every outpouring
You would see every afflicted one
coursing toward you, and every blazing thing.
Yearning for you, and every inflamed heart.
لكنbut وجدتُI found بَرَاعَتِيmy skill اعْتَذَرتْhad apologized

لبَرَاعَتِيto my skill بتقاصُرِfor the shortcomings of الشِّيَمِcharacter traits
But I found my skill had offered an excuse
But my talent apologized for its inadequacy
to my skill for the shortcomings of its qualities.
In eloquence, by its lack of prowess,
فقعدتُso I sat back عنfrom تكليفِهاcharging it with سِيراًa journey
قامَstood الزمانُTime بهاwith it علىupon قَدَمِa foot
So I sat back from charging it with a journey;
So I stopped taxing it and went on
Time stood with it, upon its feet.
As time carried on at its own pace.
أَوَلَيْسَand are not أَشواقيmy longings وإِنeven if كُتِمَتْconcealed

And are not my longings, even when concealed,
Are not my passions, though concealed,
like gray hair laughing in the mouth of katam dye?
Like white hair laughing in a close-mouthed grin?
وصبابَتيand my yearning هيَit ماwhat عَلِمْتَyou knew بهاof it
نارٌa fire مُضَرَّمَةٌkindled علىupon عَلَمِa mountain peak
And my yearning is what you have known it to be:
My youth---you knew it by
a fire blazing upon a mountain peak.
A raging fire raised on a flag.
ولقدand indeed عدِمْتَyou lacked سِوىexcept لطيفِsubtle هوًىlove

And indeed you lacked all but a subtle love
You missed naught but the gentle pining
that never ceased drawing me out of nothingness.
That still brings me out of oblivion.

I choked on bitter saltwater, yet was not
And I was imbued with burning salt, yet I forgot not
made to forget the sweetness of cool, cold water.
The sweet intoxication of chilled wine.
وسُئِلْتُand I was asked حينَwhen غَرقْتُI drowned فيin كُرَبٍtroubles

And when I drowned in troubles, I was asked
When sunk in sorrow I was asked of you
about them; I said, "I drowned in generosity."
I said I was sunk in nobility.

I am asked, "Why have you not censured?" while I am
And I am told, why do you not blame
occupied with praising the keeper of covenants.
One whose praise is my duty to proclaim?
دَعْleave aside منof حديثِtalk of حوادثٍmisfortunes كثُرتْthat grew numerous
إِنindeed الهمومَcares نتائجُthe results of الهِممِaspirations
Leave aside talk of misfortunes grown numerous;
Leave off talk of events now many,
indeed, cares are the offspring of aspirations.
For troubles are the fruits of ambitions.
وكفاكَand enough for you منof ذكرmentioning المُلِمَّةِthe calamity ماwhat

Enough for you, in recalling calamity, is what
And spare me describing what
has marked faces with the adornment of tresses.
Has poisoned faces with villainy's mark.
ولأَجْلِand because of صرفِthe reversals of الدهرِTime صرتُI became متىwhenever
أَبصرتُI looked لمdid not أَبصِرْI see سوىexcept ظُلَمِdarkness
And Time's reversals have brought me to this: whenever
So that I may divert fate's turns, whene'er
I look, I see nothing but darkness.
I look, I see only darkness.
ونَعَمْand yes جهِلْتُI acted ignorantly فقمتُso I rose عنfrom نِعمِblessings

And yes, I was foolish: I rose from blessings
Good I know not! I rose from bounty
that were with you, and took my stand amid blessings.
You had, and rose into bounty,

Alas, my ruin! I left the Arabs;
And lost it. I left Arab ways
alas, my ruin! I entered among non-Arabs.
And lost them, entered foreign ones.

My merchandise is my speech, and the least saleable thing
My wares are my words, and most ruined is what
sold is speech to those who are deaf.
Of speech is sold to the deaf.

My anguish at speechlessness—where can I find it,
My craving is for dumbfounding---where is it
to pair speechlessness with charcoal?
To dumbfound foreigners with embers?

Rather, would that this gloom had revealed
Rather would that it lift gloom's veil
the face of wandering to those burdened by gloom.
From the faces of the gloomy.

And I am to blame; if I return
And I who am blamed, if I return
to it again after this, then blame me.
To what I'd left, am made a fool.

Be gracious, most exalted Abu Hasan, and rise
Do best, Abu Hasan, rise high
to dispel it, and strike at the summits.
To reveal it, strike the peaks.

And meet the battalions, O son of their father,
Ready battalions, son of his father,
with letters, and assail the sword with the pen.
With books, and hurl the sword with the pen.

And offer service, with my kiss upon the carpet, to him
And serve, by my kissing the carpet, him
for whom Time has become one of the servants.
For whom time has been a servant.

And present to him his servant's condition
Show him in secret the state of his servant,
in secret; alert him to it, and sleep.
Hint to him, and sleep.

And both—a captive, through you a master forever—
Each of us is your captive, eternally your subject.
so by the right of your sovereignty—may you never be lost—endure.
So by your rule never cut short his thread!

O Yasir ibn Bilal, vengeance has been taken
O Ya'qub ibn Bilal, the turns of fate avenged themselves on me
on me by Time's reversals; so avenge me.
So avenge me!

This is your father, the sea: it has encroached upon
This, your father, is the sea that exceeded
my wealth, and made my blood flow in my tears.
My property's limit and shed my tears.

And it assaulted my sacred things, though they had been placed
It trespassed on my sanctuary, which since
in sanctuary ever since I attached myself to you.
I gave myself to you, has been inviolate.

Every day there comes from it a calamity;
Every day it assails me
my pain at it is that I feel no pain.
With a blow that pains me for being unfelt.

So in it I become the fingertips of one in anguish,
So in it I become a youth of yearning
at one time, and at another the tooth of one remorseful.
Now like one grown old in regret.

You gave me what it has set about taking
You gave me what continues taking
from me, and your expectation of it has not held true.
From me while you thought it did not exist.

Gently—I am not saying your counterpart
Know I do not say your hatred
is richer in meanness than you in generosity.
In adversity is dearer than your kindness.

How many complainers and self-beaters are among us,

upon which every heaped-up wave has come!
To which every rider comes.

Why have I been assailed by every tempest?
Why am I pelted with every gale?
I am not of 'Ad, nor of Iram.
I am not 'Aad or Iram of the Pillars.
