درُ علمٍ يلوح في فلكِ الفضْ

درُ علمٍ يلوح في فلكِ الفضْ

لِ عليه من المفاخرِ هالَهْ

لِ عليه من المفاخرِ هالَهْ

A pearl of learning shines in the sphere of excellence,

with a halo of glorious deeds about him.

كم فقيرٍ أغنى بمُغدقِ جدوى

كم فقيرٍ أغنى بمُغدقِ جدوى

راحتَيْهِ وذي عثار أقالَهْ

راحتَيْهِ وذي عثار أقالَهْ

Many a poor man he has enriched with the lavish bounty

of his two hands, and many a fallen man he has helped rise.

وأسيرٍ أتاه يرسُفُ في قي

وأسيرٍ أتاه يرسُفُ في قي

دِ هوان ففكّ عنه عِقالَهْ

دِ هوان ففكّ عنه عِقالَهْ

And many a captive came to him, shuffling in the fetters

of humiliation, so he undid his bonds.

وإذا أشكل السؤالُ انتَحَتْهُ

وإذا أشكل السؤالُ انتَحَتْهُ

لحظةٌ منه بيّنَتْ إشكالَهْ

لحظةٌ منه بيّنَتْ إشكالَهْ

And when a question proves obscure, it is met

by a glance from him that clears up its difficulty.

بدرُ علمٍ يضيءُ روضةَ فضلٍ

بدرُ علمٍ يضيءُ روضةَ فضلٍ

غيثُ جودٍ يسحّ طودُ جلالَهْ

غيثُ جودٍ يسحّ طودُ جلالَهْ

A full moon of learning lighting a garden of excellence,

a rain of bounty pouring down, a mountain of majesty.

جمع الله فيه مُفترَقَ الفض

جمع الله فيه مُفترَقَ الفض

لِ وماذا سواه في الدهر نالَهْ

لِ وماذا سواه في الدهر نالَهْ

God gathered in him the scattered forms of excellence;

and who besides him, in all time, has attained it?

هو كالشافعيّ علماً إسحا

هو كالشافعيّ علماً إسحا

قَ ويحيى ضبطاً وعُمقَ أصالَهْ

قَ ويحيى ضبطاً وعُمقَ أصالَهْ

He is like al-Shafi‘i in learning, like Ishaq

and Yahya in precision and profound originality.

أيها الحافظُ الذي طاولَ النج

أيها الحافظُ الذي طاولَ النج

مَ الى نيلِه المعالي فطالَهْ

مَ الى نيلِه المعالي فطالَهْ

O Hafiz, who rivaled the star

in reaching the heights, and rose above it,

ما تغنّى الحمامُ في أفُقِ الفج

ما تغنّى الحمامُ في أفُقِ الفج

رِ وهزّت ريحُ الشمائِلِ ضالَهْ

رِ وهزّت ريحُ الشمائِلِ ضالَهْ

as long as doves sing on the horizon of dawn

and the north wind shakes a wild lote tree.
