A palace—along its walks the breeze has spoken

Within it of its gardens' hidden secret.

Its loftiness humbled al-Khawarnaq and al-Sadir,

And made the Romans' palaces fall short.

The clouds wound around it, a turban of musk,

And so it stood on ground of camphor.

Rhetoric, enamored of it, made its description a play on words:

Then it smiled, revealing lovely blossoms and light.

So the great trees trail a robe of fine silk,

Resplendent with the scattered pearls of its dew.

And the palms, like graceful, budding-breasted maidens, wear earrings

    Of ingots, strung and scattered.

And the sand, in ripples woven by the breeze, seems

To reveal branching lines on the sides of a frightened man's neck.

And the sea makes its back tremble, so it seems to be

A coat of mail whispering against a shivering man's flanks.

And we seem, as the palace gathers us together,

To be on the horizon among stars and full moons.

And likewise the age of Banu Khalif has never ceased

To sway its flanks in the brocade of joy.
