I sway your sides with verses I compose,

As winds sway the verdant bough of the bān tree,

Until you seem, O Abbas, to be linked

In excellence’s lineage to al-Abbas of Mudar.

So send a coat of mail like an asp’s skin, accompanied

By an Indian-steel sword like a male serpent’s tongue,

And a helmet—no sooner does there rise in its deep waters

A glance of the eye than it swiftly vanishes—

And a shield whose bosses resemble

The Pleiades’ pattern appearing within the moon’s disk.

And do not tell me, ‘I have an excuse to reveal,’

For in this I accept no excuse-maker’s words.
