What can I say, endowed as I am with discernment

before which the pride of the sciences bows,

about a companion whose appearance deceived me,

so that, in ignorance, I dismissed what I had heard of him?

    فإذا أتى وقت الجنى ممنوعَهُ

    Whenever he does wrong, I am always its recipient;

yet when harvest time comes, I am denied its fruit.

He spread affection on his tongue, while his heart

folded its ribs around something other than affection.

All this, while illness had made my limbs

a ruined campsite, prolonging its stay in its two courtyards.

He never once visited me to prolong his lament

in sorrow for me, nor did he let his tears flow.

So I forgave that and said: “Many a one who left

have I patiently borne with until I was granted his return.”

And I was content with one reluctant visit from him,

from which his longing had shut off its wellspring.

He inscribed affectation on its brows for me:

“Yearn still more, for he intends to withdraw.”

And I began watching for him at the time of his coming,

as you watch the crescent moon for its rising.

    أبدى تطبعُهُ بها مطبوعَهُ

    Then one side of that visit turned askance;

his affected manner in it revealed his inborn nature.

He stirred up the dust of his estrangement, yet

did not forsake me until he left its poison in his stead.

Hold, for molten metal is sweeter to drink

than your Salsabil, root and branch.

So cut it off from me, and claim it as a plot

where the hands of separation have raised its dwellings.

I do not love the friend who draws near for an hour

to me, then keeps away for a week.
