O you, to whose face I offered

my soul—and that is little for him.

They concealed your beauty with all their might,

and, so they thought, obscured the way to it.

They named you Ḍirghām ('Lion'), though you

are a gazelle-fawn, and called you Ibn Fīlah ('Son of an Elephant').

They left, in concealing your affair,

O beauty of the earth, no ruse untried.

    Indeed darkness, when it deepens,

is a reason for revealing the wick.
