I have a heart that longing nearly wrests away,
I have a heart that longing nearly tears away,
yet it does not know what its ribs conceal.
and it knows not what its ribs conceal.
يظلّit remains ظمآنَthirsty مطوياًfolded علىaround حُرَقِburning pangs
إنif باتَit spends the night يُبصِرُseeing ماءًwater وهوwhile he يمنعُهُwithholds it
It remains thirsty, folded around burning anguish,
It remains parched, folded around burning anguish,
though all night it gazes on water that denies itself to it.
even if it spends the night seeing water he withholds.
ماas much as شئتyou wish ياO ليلُnight فامدُدْthen extend منof دجاكَyour darkness فقدfor already

Do as you will, O night, and draw out your darkness—for already
Prolong your darkness as you wish, O night, for already
the heralds of a dawn have gleamed, and its rising is near.
dawn's first gleams have appeared; its rising hour has come.
ياO أيهاyou (vocative) البدرُfull moon كمhow often يرعاكَwatches you ذوone with سهَرٍsleeplessness
ماnot زلتَyou have ceased بالبعدِwith distance فيin قربٍnearness تُروّعَهُyou frighten him
O full moon, how many a sleepless watcher keeps vigil over you!
O full moon, how often a sleepless soul watches you!
Distant even in nearness, you never cease to dismay him.
You never cease to frighten him with distance, even when near.
للهto God درُّكَyour excellence كمhow often يدعوكَcalls to you ذوone with كلَفٍardent love

بانٍthat (apparently بأن; reading uncertain) تُجيبُyou answer دعاهُhis call حينwhen يَسمَعُهُhe hears it
How wondrous your worth! How many a passion-stricken lover calls on you—
God bless you! How often a lovesick man calls to you,
one parted from you; you answer his plea when he hears it.
that you might answer his call upon hearing it.
بيناwhile يَرىhe sees قدرَهُhis standing نَزْراًmeager فيؤنِسُهand so reassures him

While he sees his allotted share as scant, it comforts him,
While he deems his standing slight, he is reassured,
until he sees affection toward him overflowing, and it makes him hope for more.
until he sees his affection abundant and is filled with hope.
فهلso is there سبيلٌa way علىwith حِفظِthe protection الزّمانِof Time لهُfor him
الىto المُثولِappearing in person بنادٍat a gathering منكَof yours يرفَعُهُthat exalts him
Is there, then, some way for Time to preserve him
So is there a way for him, with Time's protection,
until he appears in an assembly of yours that will exalt him?
to appear at a gathering of yours that would exalt him?
