Take heart, and be steadfast before calamity;
Be easy on yourself, and bear calamity patiently;
for the wise endure patiently when calamity descends.
for one endowed with reason endures when calamity descends.
وماand not غبَنْتَyou have suffered loss بنجمٍthrough a star منfrom بينكَyour midst هوىfell
وما غبَنْتَ بنجمٍ من بينكَ هوى

وقد بقيتَ مضيئاً أيها القمرُ
A star falling from among you has not diminished you,
Nor are you the poorer for a star that fell from your midst,
while you remain radiant, O moon.
while you remain radiant, O moon.

غُنْمٌa gain وإنand even if مرّhas departed منكfrom you السمعhearing والبصرand sight
غُنْمٌ وإن مرّ منك السمع والبصر
When you see that death has passed you by, then say:
If you see that death has missed you, say:
“It is a gain, even if hearing and sight have left you.”
“A gain, even if your hearing and sight have left you.”
والغصنand the branch ماas long as دامit remains موجوداًin existence بنضرتهwith its freshness
والغصن ما دام موجوداً بنضرته
فماso not يُضرُّdoes harm بهto it أنthat يسقطَshould fall الثمرُthe fruit
فما يُضرُّ به أن يسقطَ الثمرُ
And so long as the bough remains in all its freshness,
And the branch, so long as it remains fresh,
what harm can it suffer if the fruit falls?
is not harmed by the falling of its fruit.
