    أقام بها يبكي فليسَ يَسيرُ

    Houses on the outskirts of al-Salihiyya grieved him;

    he stayed there weeping and would not journey on.

    Dwellings whose traces, once fresh, were effaced

    by a rain-laden cloud stirred up by the winds.

    Though dwellings stand empty of Asma's presence,

    hearts this morning are surely filled with her.

    I marvel at her: she withdraws in coldness, while her phantom

    draws near when darkness falls and visits me.

    At her phantom's visit, from her sweet fragrance I have—

    and from my overflowing tears—a garden and a pool.

    And when Asma appeared, around her swayed

    full-breasted maidens who laid the discerning low, and wide-eyed beauties.

    Their rounded hips mirrored the passion in my heart,

    and their waists the patience that I have.

    And I saw sand-dunes; to their right there swayed

    branches, with full moons above the branches.

    They passed the gazelles of the sandy tract, and there met

    at its edges the tame and the shy.

    They neared the protected meadow's borders, and there grew alike

    the mouths of daisies on the hills and their own mouths.

    Ah, God confound those eyes, for they

    rule over us in pride and do us wrong.

    They pursue the very cores of hearts, as though

    they had blood-feuds with the very cores of hearts.

    O you who sever the cord of union, be gentle

    a little, for my heart is captive in your hands.

    You women forgot a pledge we bound between us,

    yet I, O woman, remember it well.

    And that is only because, at night, there appeared to you,

    startling you, a scattering of gray amid my whiskers.

    And a wilderness across whose reaches the wind stumbles,

    and from which the gaze returns exhausted—

    I crossed it tracklessly, steadfast of heart, on a mature she-camel

    that almost flies when the road runs clear.

    There the camel-drivers say, as from the darkness

    veils are lifted for the brightening dawn:

    “Dawn's whiteness in the pitch-black night is like

    a bright sword unsheathed, its leather scabbard slit open.”

    كذلك يسْري ضوؤه ويَنورُ

    I said, “You are far off! Rather, it mirrors Ahmad's face;

    just so his light travels through the night and shines.”

    لعمرُك ما في ذي المقالةِ زُورُ

    They all said, “You have found its likeness;

    by your life, there is no falsehood in this claim.”

    Abu Tahir, take pride in what you have attained,

    for none among the people of this age is your equal.

    This countenance of yours has clothed the feast in a robe

    in which its face shines before all who gaze.

    You raised the beacon of learning in east and west,

    so all its rulings turn upon you.

    وللعِرْضِ من بذْلِ المكارمِ سُورُ

    You guarded your honor by lavishing generosity, and it stood protected;

    the bestowal of noble favors is a rampart for honor.

    فبابُك من ماءِ السحابِ مطيرُ

    You were shown generosity's cloud on the horizon of night;

    thus your door is rain-drenched with the cloud's water.

    No wonder, since your beneficent hands have never ceased

    pouring bounty, that no poor person remains.

    ولما يخِبْ ركبٌ إليك يَسيرُ

    To you came my riding-camels, folding up the deserts;

    no caravan journeying to you has yet met disappointment.

    If you do not shelter us from misfortunes that have come in succession

    upon us, who else but you will give us refuge?

    May you ever remain in glory whose stars of good fortune,

    though the days grow long, shall never set.
