It is where the breezes' fragrances meet; look, you two:

Do you recognize there the freshest green bough?

The clouds' dripping rain had watered it into a grove,

and a cooing dove had mounted it as a pulpit.

The summits of its hills crowned themselves with flowers

of gold, and its dew garlanded them with jewels.

And in the sky, dawn had slaughtered darkness,

so camphor drew the ambergris out of it.

As though the pool grew rapturous, there was torn

from its breast by the crosswind a mantle of green.

At last, when the cloud trailed its skirts

over it, silvering and gilding whatever it wished,

and the breeze drifted through, swaying a slender waist

within it and awakening a bright, dark-pupilled eye,

I coaxed his crescent moon in the cloud of the veil,

until he swept it from his beauty and shone moon-bright.

And I tore open the wine jar's collar to reveal cooled wine,

casting a crimson cloak upon the water.

Frightened by the sword of dilution, it fashioned against it

a coat of mail and helmet of interwoven bubbles.

Had dilution not reached it when it blazed

in the cupbearer's hand, I would have feared he might catch fire.

I built it into a palace and with my own palm served

Kisra Anushirwan and Caesar within it.

And I dipped the wind's robe into its cups,

until the north winds' fragrance spread still sweeter.

As though it were the mention of Abu al-Hasan

through which panegyrics released pungent musk.

And were it something one could sip, I would pass it round

unmixed to him, even though he shunned intoxicants.

His virtues grew sweet and breathed aloeswood

when they found the fire of my thought a censer.

His qualities blossomed and flourished as a garden,

as his bounty made a Kawthar flow through it.

The pupil of glory's eye, from within his robes,

gazes out, accepting no eye-socket but him.

The opening chapters of eminence describe his perfection,

if the Quran of glory is penned or inscribed.

And the strands of glory's crown are the pearls of his virtues,

were the spirit of praise to take embodied form.

The sun was led as a bride to you, O full moon of eminence,

amid clouds of protection that rained swords.

She unveiled herself in your home, whose neighbor is safeguarded,

and took the radiant morning into her service there.

A sun: the sun itself wishes it might glimpse her

bower—how much more the one secluded within it!

As though she were the secret entrusted to you,

God's, in the heights, kept hidden in your care.

So delight in her on a day whose splendor you wore

as a mantle upon you, striped and richly patterned.

You displayed upon it a pleasure-ground of delights,

like a garden, fair in sight or substance.

In a hall, no sooner had there swayed along its sides

the trees of lustrous silk than they bore fruit.

And as though your palm—itself a pouring rain—

touched the edges of its sides, and it burst into bloom.

And waters of delicacies burst forth within it,

flowing, keeping everyone who came from leaving.

Of every well-proportioned kind, evenly balanced

in its parts by morning's hand, which measured them out.

The waters race smoothly within it,

and the glances of eyes gesture languidly.

And a three-sided dish whose smoothness baffled

    Aristotle and Alexander long ago.

They tasted delicious pistachios, sweet when gathered,

within it, just as they sampled the sugar there.

And folded pastries, whose crescent I had never seen

at any time shining moon-bright except at night.

Like the blessed believer whose heart concealed,

in obedience to the Merciful, what it did not reveal.

And marvelous fruits proclaim their own praise,

almost filling both ears of whoever sees them:

figs in the season of spring, inscribed,

and unripe dates in summer, safflower-dyed.

    وَلَقَدْ خُصِصْتَ مِنَ الثَّنَاءِ بِأَكْثَرا

    Delights you bestowed on the age and all its people;

indeed, you have been singled out for still more praise.

    وَكَفَى بِذَلِكَ نِسْبَةً أَوْ مَفْخَرَا

    O sons of Khulayf, you are the heirs of eminence;

that suffices as lineage or a source of pride.

To God belongs your lofty glory, for it

has reached al-Simak and risen higher still.

You surpassed others in noble deeds with a palm

so noble that I counted no little finger in it.

Through Abu Muhammad the jurist, your father,

you secured the fullest share of perfection.

So too the branches: the sweetness of their fruit shows

that God made their root good.

May you ever remain in glory the noblest family,

the greatest of peoples and the most honorable clan.
