سقاني بعينيه كأسَ الهَوى
وثنّىand gave a second وثلّثand gave a third بالحاجِبِwith the eyebrow
وثنّى وثلّث بالحاجِبِ
He gave me the cup of passion to drink with his eyes,
And a second and a third with his eyebrow.
كأنّas though العذارَthe cheek-down علىupon خدّهhis cheek
كأنّ العذارَ على خدّه
فذالكُtallies منfrom مشقةِpen practice الكاتبِthe scribe’s
فذالكُ من مشقةِ الكاتبِ
As though the down upon his cheek
Were tallies from a scribe’s pen practice.
