منيfrom me إليكto you وقدand already تباعدَhas grown distant بينناbetween us
بُعدٌdistance وصالَand assailed علىagainst الصدودِestrangement وصالُunion
From me to you, though there has grown between us
a distance, and union has assailed estrangement.
وجَلاand unveiled بمجْلِسِناat our gathering الربيعُspring عروسَهُits bride
لعبتْplayed بمِعطَفهاabout her flank صَباan east wind وشمالُand a north wind
And spring unveiled its bride at our gathering;
the east and north winds played about her flank.
غازلْتهاI wooed her والكأسفand the cup (apparently intended) فيin آفاقِهاher horizons
نجمٌa star توقّدblazed والمُديرُand the cupbearer هِلالُa crescent moon
I wooed her, while the cup upon her horizons
was a blazing star, and the cupbearer a crescent moon.
فلوتْthen she twisted معاطفَهاher flanks تميسُswaying gracefully كأنّماas though
حكمتْhad ruled عليهاover her القهوةُthe wine الجِريالُruby-red
Then she twisted her flanks, swaying as though
the ruby-red wine had gained mastery over her.
فانعمْso delight بهاin her هيفاءَslender-waisted عرْفُthe scent نسيمِهاof her breeze
أرَجٌsweet perfume وروضُand the garden جمالِهاof her beauty مِخْضالِlush with dew
So delight in her, slender-waisted: the scent of her breeze
is sweet perfume, and the garden of her beauty is lush with dew.
حملتْshe bore منof الأزهارِthe blossoms أشباهَlikenesses الرُبىthe hills
فتساوتِso became alike الأمثالُthe likenesses والأشكالُand the forms
She bore, in blossoms, likenesses of the hills;
thus the likenesses and forms became alike.
فالآسُso the myrtle صدْعٌa cleft (as written) والأقاحيand the daisies مَبْسِمٌa smiling mouth
والوردُand the rose خدُّa cheek والبنفسجُand the violet خالُa beauty spot
So the myrtle is a cleft, and the daisies a smiling mouth;
and the rose is a cheek, and the violet a beauty spot.
