A female oud-player sang us a song

That resembled the wrenching out of the soul and death.

كأنها والعُودُ في حِجْرها

كأنها والعُودُ في حِجْرها

ثاكلةٌ قد أسندَتْ مَيْتا

ثاكلةٌ قد أسندَتْ مَيْتا

As though she, with the oud in her lap,

Were a bereaved mother who had propped up a corpse.

شبّهتُها من فوقِ أوتارِه

شبّهتُها من فوقِ أوتارِه

بعنكبوتٍ نسجَتْ بيتا

بعنكبوتٍ نسجَتْ بيتا

I likened her, above its strings,

To a spider that had woven a web.
