Do you seek a friend true in affection?

You have attempted something far beyond reach, if you only knew.

Do not be deceived: many a young man has followed

a conjecture that leads astray, and shunned certainty.

What delights you in its beauty may well terrify you,

like a sword, fearsome in assault and lovely in its gleam.

And often a thirsty man has glimpsed thunderbolts

striking at him, yet taken them for lightning.

    ولو استبانَهُمُ أرْوهُ فُروقا

    The resemblance of opposites deceives an onlooker;

yet, if he discerned them clearly, they would show him differences.

The sons of this age, though outwardly sincere toward you

one day, conceal a tainted inward self from you.

Great trees whose fruit turns bitter for you at the plucking,

though the winds pass them clothed in leaves.

So cling to the edges of affection, for

whoever battles the waves dies by drowning.

When sincerity reaches its utmost, it brings about its opposite:

    coming together begets separation.

Be patient with Time's reversals, for perhaps

at the racecourse you will come to value recognition.

If your friend does not treat you fairly,

then make divorce your marriage to his affection.

It is an affliction that your heart is bound

in brotherhood to one whose heart remains unbound.

He turns his heart from your affection, unburdened,

and draws a sword of might, quivering against you.

    فذوَتْ نضارتُهُ وكان أنيقا

    His scorching wind blew over the garden of sincerity;

its freshness withered, though it had been lovely.

He grew bold in attack, so I said, to deceive him,

'Be gentle with me, for you have met a fearful man.'

The fierce attacker's hand spurred him on; he did not know

that I had found a path to safety.

Alas for him! How he stretched out his fingertips,

clever though he was, seeking to reach al-Ayyuq!

Why did he not shun a path that, if entered

by Time's vicissitudes, would leave even them confined?

His two ends match: a branch in generosity,

fresh and green, and a root deeply set among the noble.

The wind of plots grew foul about him, and headed

from his two flanks toward a summit in narration.

How long shall I grow, in treating him fairly,

kinder to him, while he grows more disloyal toward me?

I offer him the purity of my affection,

yet he offers me the murk of his love.

A reproach, Abu al-Abbas: I have drawn its sword,

keen, fine at both edges, razor-sharp.

You told me of one whose all-embracing bounty

encompasses the deprived and the well provided for.

Despite your betrayal, I offer fidelity, for I

am still bound in the cord of love.

May no arrow of yours be blunted—its point sharpened

by Time's vicissitudes, it then sought to pierce me through.

He has never ceased giving us the wine of his verse,

until we thought him its wine-strainer.

It is pure wine, though I am surely misreading the letters:

if I spoke precisely, I would call it a blaze.
