ومِنَand among البلِيَّةِmisfortune أَننيthat I فيin بلدةٍa town
ذَلَّwas abased التقيُّthe pious man بهاin it وعَزَّand was exalted الفاجرُthe wicked man
And among my misfortunes is that I am in a town
where the pious man is abased and the wicked man exalted.
أَبصرتُI saw فيin الديوانِthe bureau أعمَىa blind man جالساًsitting
فسأَلْتُso I asked مَنْwho هذَاthis فقِيلَand it was said الناظِرُthe overseer
I saw a blind man sitting in the bureau;
so I asked, "Who is this?" and was told, "The overseer."
ورأَيتُهand I saw him وَهُوَwhile he was الأَشَلُّthe man with a paralyzed hand مُقَلَّدٍاgirded with
سيفاًa sword وماand what يُغْنِيbenefits الأَشَلَّthe man with a paralyzed hand الباتِرُthe keen blade
And I saw him, though his hand was paralyzed, girded
with a sword—what use is a keen blade to a man with a paralyzed hand?
ولقدand indeed أَبانَتْmade clear ليto me الدفاترُthe ledgers أَنَّهthat he
شخصٌa person كثيرmuch الغَيِّwrongdoing فَدْمٌdull-witted فاتِرٌsluggish
And the ledgers indeed made it plain to me that he
is a man much given to wrongdoing, dull-witted and sluggish.
فصرفتُso I turned عنهaway from him عِنانَthe reins of حاجِيَmy need زاهِدًاhaving no desire
فيfor ناظِرٍan overseer قدindeed غَصَّhas choked منهon him الناظِرُthe eye
So I turned the reins of my need away from him, having no desire
for an overseer on whom the eye itself has choked.
ماnot كنتُI was أَرغبُI long فيfor زمانٍan age أَولٍearlier
فَيَرُوقَنِيso it should delight me هذاthis الزمانُthe age الآخِرُthe latter
I had no liking for an earlier age—
so how should this latter age delight me?
