أبا الحسَنِ احفظْ ودادي فقد

أبا الحسَنِ احفظْ ودادي فقد

أسفتُ على مثلِه أن يُضاعا

أسفتُ على مثلِه أن يُضاعا

Abu al-Hasan, preserve my affection, for

I have grieved that its like should be squandered.

وجدْ بالذِراعِ كما قد وعَدْتَ

وجدْ بالذِراعِ كما قد وعَدْتَ

ولو كان ذاك الذراعُ الذِراعا

ولو كان ذاك الذراعُ الذِراعا

And give the cubit freely, as you have promised,

even if that cubit were the celestial Arm.

ولا يَغْرُرَنّك لينُ العتابِ

ولا يَغْرُرَنّك لينُ العتابِ

فإنّ العتابَ إذا راقَ راعا

فإنّ العتابَ إذا راقَ راعا

And let not the gentleness of reproach deceive you,

for reproach, when it charms, alarms.
