أَباO Abu حَسَنٍHasan أَحْسَنْتَyou have been kind بَدْءًاat first وعَوْدَةًand on return
أَبا حَسَنٍ أَحْسَنْتَ بَدْءًا وعَوْدَةً
وحَسَّنْتَand you made good فعلاًconduct جِيئةًcoming وذَهَاباand going
وحَسَّنْتَ فعلاً جِيئةً وذَهَابا
O Abu Hasan, you have been kind at first and on return,
And you have acted well in coming and going.
وماand not أَناI إلاَّexcept خادِمٌa servant لَكَyours رِقُّهُhis bondage
وما أَنا إلاَّ خادِمٌ لَكَ رِقُّهُ
وإِنْand although كنتI am حُرَّfreeborn الوالِدَيْنِboth parents لُباباpure of stock
وإِنْ كنت حُرَّ الوالِدَيْنِ لُبابا
And I am nothing but a servant whose bondage is yours,
Though I am freeborn on both sides, of pure stock.
وقدand indeed غَيَّبَتْنِيkept me absent عَنْfrom عُلاكَyour eminence عوارِضٌhindrances
وقد غَيَّبَتْنِي عَنْ عُلاكَ عوارِضٌ
رَمَتْنِيshot at me بسهمٍwith an arrow للخطوبِof calamities أَصاباhit its mark
رَمَتْنِي بسهمٍ للخطوبِ أَصابا
And hindrances have kept me from your exalted presence,
They shot at me with an arrow of calamity that struck home.
وغيرُand not عجيبٍstrange أَنthat أُوافِيكَI come to you مجرماًguilty
وغيرُ عجيبٍ أَن أُوافِيكَ مجرماً
أَتيتُI have come وأَرْجُوand I hope فيin ذَرَاكَyour shelter مَتَابَاrepentance
أَتيتُ وأَرْجُو في ذَرَاكَ مَتَابَا
And it is no wonder that I come to you guilty;
I have come, hoping for repentance under your protection.
فأَسْأَلُso I ask رَدَّthe restoration of العَفْوِpardon منكfrom you تَفَضُّلاًas a gracious favor
فأَسْأَلُ رَدَّ العَفْوِ منك تَفَضُّلاً
فَحَسْبِيَfor it suffices me كَوْنِيmy being غِبْتُI was absent عنكَfrom you عِقاباas punishment
فَحَسْبِيَ كَوْنِي غِبْتُ عنكَ عِقابا
So I ask you, as a gracious favor, to restore your pardon;
For my absence from you is punishment enough for me.
