أصابتْstruck سهامُthe arrows of البأسِaffliction قلبَthe heart of المطامعِaspirations
وصابَتْand poured down بغَيثِwith the rain of البأسaffliction سحبُthe clouds of الفجائعِcalamities
The arrows of affliction struck the heart of aspirations,
And the clouds of calamity poured down a rain of affliction.
وماand not أرْسِلِwas sent الناعيthe death-herald بهwith it يومon the day of موتِهhis death
سوىexcept صممٍdeafness أصمىstruck fatally صَميمِthe very core of المَسامِعِthe ears
And on the day he died, the death-herald was sent with nothing
But deafness that dealt a mortal blow to the very heart of hearing.
وقدand indeed خلّفتْhave left فيناamong us أياديهِhis benefactions روضةa garden
سَقاهاwatered it سحابُthe clouds of العوجدِgrief (probable reading; text unclear) غيثthe rain of المدامعtears
And his benefactions have left a garden among us,
Which grief's clouds watered with a rain of tears.
فكمso how many لبيوتِfor the verses of الشِعْرِpoetry منof دوحةٍa spreading tree بهاin it
وكمand how many للقوافيfor the rhymes منof حَمامٍdoves سواجِعِcooing
So many spreading trees for poetry's verses grow within it,
And so many cooing doves for the rhymes!
وكمand how many جَفْنِan eyelid of ضيفِa guest سائلِflowing with الدمعِtears ساهرٍwakeful
وكمand how many جفنِa sheath of سيفٍa sword جامدِcongealed الدمِblood هاجعِsleeping
And many a guest's eyelid lies sleepless, streaming tears,
And many a sword's sheath slumbers, its blood congealed!

And the doom of sword-edges lay in his right hand;
So now they are safe from its relentless ravages.
وأحسبُand I think أنthat الموتَDeath وافاهُcame to him سائلاًas a petitioner
فبلّغَهُso he let him attain ماwhat رامَهُhe sought it غيرُnot مانِعِwithholding
And I think Death came to him as a petitioner,
So he granted him what he sought, withholding nothing.
وماand not كنتُI used to أخشىfear غيرَهُanything other than it وقدand already انقضىit has passed
فكلso every مصابcalamity بعدَهُafter it غيرَnot فاجعِheart-rending
And I feared nothing but this, and now it has passed;
So no calamity after it can be heart-rending.
وأقسمُand I swear لوif ماتَdied امرؤa man قبلَbefore وقتِهhis appointed time
لكنتُthen I would have been علىon الأعقابِthe heels أولَthe first تابعِfollower
And I swear: if a man could die before his appointed time,
I would have been the first to follow on his heels.
عجبتُI marveled لقبرٍat a grave باتَhe lay بينَbetween ضُلوعِهits ribs
يقالit is said لهto it سُقيتَmay you be watered غيثَthe rain of الهوامِعِpouring clouds
I marveled at a grave within whose ribs he lay,
To which they say, 'May you be watered with rain from pouring clouds!'
وهلand do تنفعُhelp الأنواءrain-bearing stars فيin سَقْيwatering تُرْبِهِhis soil

And can the rain-bearing stars help water his grave's soil,
Beside the surging flood of the ocean's right hand?
