قدat times أغتديI set out early والصبحُwhile dawn خفّاقُfluttering العذَبْthe pennons
وعسكَرُand the army الليلِof night مجدٌّhastening فيin الهرَبْflight
At times I set out early—while dawn's pennons flutter,
and night's army hastens in flight,
وللدّراريand for the bright stars دُرَرٌpearls بلاwithout ثُقَبْholes
براحةِby the palm الأنوارof the lights راحَتْthey began تُنتهَبْto be plundered
and the bright stars have unpierced pearls,
which the palm of light has begun to plunder,
كأنهاas though they were فيin لُجّةِthe depths of البحرِthe sea حبَبْbubbles
والوُرْقُand the gray doves فيin أوراقِهاtheir leaves ذاتُfull of صخَبْclamor
as though they were bubbles in the depths of the sea,
and the gray doves clamor amid their leaves,
حينwhen رأتْthey saw جيشَthe army of الدُجىdarkness قدِalready انقلَبْturned back
إذas ضربَstruck السِّرحانُthe wolf فيهinto it بذَنَبْwith a tail
when they saw the army of darkness had turned back,
as the wolf lashed it with its tail,
والصبحُand dawn قدalready صالcharged عليهagainst it وغلَبْand prevailed
ففرّso it fled عنهfrom him وهوwhile he لاnot يثنيslacken الطلبthe pursuit
and dawn had charged against it and prevailed,
so it fled from him, while he did not slacken the pursuit,
كماjust as تفرّflee الزّنْجُthe Zanj منfrom جورِthe oppression of العرَبْthe Arabs
بمُخْطَفِwith one lean in الكشْحَيْنِboth flanks منfrom غيرِnot سغَبْhunger
as the Zanj flee from the oppression of the Arabs—
with one lean in both flanks, though not from hunger.
