And one night, in its darkness, you raised

a sun of tawny wine that did not veil itself.

You began a battle among its horsemen,

in which the steeds of rapture gallop with us.

Its lances are candles, and its swords

the fire of ghada wood; and the blood is grape juice.

We freely give our souls to wine,

yet we take back what we give,

beneath a sky of smoke, whose

sparks leap like plunging shooting stars.

When the breeze splits its branches,

you would think them clamoring tongues.

And the candles stood upright, so you charged them

to bring forth citrons above the gold.
