After my hair has grayed, can my youth return?

Far from it! The prime of youth does not return.

Or is there a return for the one who exposed me to reproach?

And can it be hoped for after such shunning?

For my heart is in painful torment,

And my eyes' tears are like drops from the clouds.

And a gazelle, like the gazelles of the ravines,

    Delicate-cheeked, like wine,

In her mouth, by my life, lies melted honey.

Blessed is whoever sips that sweet saliva.

In her palm is red wine, like a shooting star,

    Clear and delicate as a mirage;

It dispels rancor and mist together.

At Shakhsayn she has ruined dwellings,

And a dwelling at the valley bend, desolate in their absence.

I was there with Zaynab and al-Rabab.

And can companionship endure through time?

I wake caught in its claw, then its fang.

The morning's white clouds poured rain upon it,

    And so revealed a mantle of wondrous hue;

The hands of the clouds had embroidered it there.

And a barren wilderness, full of hills,

    به المها والعِينُ ثمّ الذئابْ

    In it are pinnacles and solid, unyielding rocks;

In it are oryx and wide-eyed wild oxen, then wolves.

I crossed it in the days of youth,

And the sun was then beneath the veil,

And night lay like dye over the hills,

On a mount with its belly folded like a book,

Slender-waisted, tall, black as a raven.

You see it like a falcon as it stands upright,

And when it swoops, like an eagle,

Or else like a lightning flash, or like a shooting star.

And what I had done was right,

Until we reached the one toward whom the riding camels head,

Seeking an imam who remained above all necks,

For his bounty is like water from the clouds.
