    لا ولا الأذكياء مثل الحميرِ

    The long-armed man is not like the short-armed;

no, nor are the intelligent like donkeys.

No, nor are the dead and the living equal,

nor is shade—know this—like scorching heat.

No, nor is one blind to humankind

—know this—like the wise, clear-sighted man.

No, nor is the miser like one whose outpouring

of bounty puts the seas’ outpouring to shame,

like the most illustrious Imam Ahmad, who became

like the full moon, shining in pitch darkness,

with far-reaching hands of bounty and a spacious abode,

looked to for every great undertaking.

He bestows abundant bounty, and yet

it is, in his eyes, like a mere trifle.

O Hafiz, imam in whom hope is placed,

and you who thus have no equal:

Give us your ruling on a matter not hidden

from the great and the small among humankind.

Are wolves compared with lions in worth,

    and are roosters like vultures?

Or is the sound-minded man compared with the dullard, or does one

regard the darkness of night as light?

Or does it trouble the sky that the dog barks?

Ah, away, then, with a contemptible dog!

    فابْقَ كهفاً في نعمةٍ وسُرورِ

    May we never lose you, O imam of humankind;

so remain a sheltering cave, in blessing and joy.
