أَبُثُكَI confide to you أَنيthat I فيin يَدِthe hand of الحبlove مُوثَقٌbound
فهلso is there مُنْقِذٌa rescuer منamong ضاربٍone who strikes أَوor مُطاعِنِone who fights with a spear
I confide to you that I am bound in love's grasp.
I confess to you that I am bound by the fetters of love,
Is there, then, a rescuer among swordsmen or spearmen?
Is there any savior from a tyrannical attacker or stabber?
وقدand indeed أَظهَرَتْrevealed سِرِّيmy secret محاسِنُthe charms of أَغْيَدٍa supple, graceful youth
يديرُhe turns علىupon لحظِthe gaze of الشَّجَىthe grieving one لَحْظَthe gaze of كاهِنِa soothsayer
And the charms of a supple youth have revealed my secret.
The charms of a gazelle have revealed my secrets,
He turns a soothsayer's gaze upon the grieving one's gaze.
Its languishing glances alternate with those of a fortune-teller.
وماand never جالَswept forth جيشُthe army of الحُبِّlove إِلاexcept that استباحَنِيlaid me waste
فؤاديmy heart ولوand even if أَصْبَحْتُI became منof آلthe house of مازِنMazin
And love's army never swept forth without laying waste to me—
The army of love invaded me and deemed me fair game,
my heart—even were I of the house of Mazin.
Even if I were from the family of Mazin my heart would still be thus enslaved.
ومنand among أَعجَبِthe strangest of الأَشياءِthings أَحورُa dark-eyed youth فاتنٌbewitching
ثناهُswayed him الهوىpassion مُغْرًىinfatuated بأَحْوَرَwith a dark-eyed youth فاتِنِbewitching
And among the strangest things is a bewitching, dark-eyed youth,
Among the most wondrous things is a charming seducer
whom passion has swayed, infatuated with another bewitching, dark-eyed youth:
Infatuation has bent him, seduced by the charms of a seducer.
غَريرٌa guileless youth إذاwhen يَهْوَىhe loves غريرًاa guileless youth وشادِنٌand a fawn
منof الإِنسhumankind مَتْبولُstricken with love الفؤادِat heart بشادنِby a fawn
a guileless youth when he loves a guileless youth, and a fawn
A fawn, when he desires a fawn, and a young branch
of humankind, his heart stricken with love for a fawn.
Of humanity, whose heart is twisted by a supple branch.
أُدِيرَwas turned عليهupon him للهوىfor love ماwhat أَدارَهُhe had turned it
وقِيدَand he was led كماjust as ينقادhe yields طَوْعَin willing submission to المُحاسِنِcharms
In love, what he had turned was turned back upon him,
He whom love has caused to alternate
and he was led, as one yields willingly to charms.
And bound as beauties themselves are bound.
ولوand if كانَthere were للعُشَّاقِfor lovers فيin الحُبِّlove مُنْصِفٌa just arbiter
لَماthen would not مَلَكَتْهُheld him in its power فيهin it راحَةُthe palm of غابِنِa cheat
And if lovers had a just arbiter in love,
If lovers had an arbiter in love
then no cheat's palm would have held him captive in it.
The spiteful would not have mastered him therein.
