وعسكريٍّand a soldier كلماwhenever رُمتُهI sought him
وعسكريٍّ كلما رُمتُه
جرّدhe unsheathed ليfor me حُبَّlove of مُلاحاتِهhis charms
جرّد لي حُبَّ مُلاحاتِه
And a soldier—whenever I sought him,
A soldier, whenever I aim at him
he unsheathed for me love of his charms.
Bares for me the charm of his prowess
آراءُthoughts قلبيof my heart منهbecause of him خفّاقةٌfluttering
آراءُ قلبي منه خفّاقةٌ
كأنهاas though they were منfrom among بعضِsome of راياتِهhis banners
كأنها من بعضِ راياتِه
My heart’s thoughts flutter because of him,
The views of my heart because of him flutter
as though they were some of his banners.
As if they were some of his flags
عُلِّقتُهI was enamored of him بدراًas a full moon ولكنّهُbut he
عُلِّقتُه بدراً ولكنّهُ
صيّرَhe made خوضَplunging into الهولِterror هالاتِهhis halos
صيّرَ خوضَ الهولِ هالاتِه
I was enamored of him as a full moon, but he
I compared him to a full moon but he
made plunging into terror his halos.
Made entering frightful wars his habit
كأنّماas though ألحاظُهhis glances علّمَتْtaught
كأنّما ألحاظُه علّمَتْ
منthose who فيكare in you غاراتِGhārāt (apparently an addressed name) غاراتِهhis raids
من فيك غاراتِ غاراتِه
It is as though his glances taught
As if his glances had taught
those within you, Ghārāt, his raids.
