هيهاتَhow far-fetched! تعطِفُyou sway بالملامwith reproach جَموحاa headstrong one
وتغضّand you lower طَرفاًa gaze منbecause of هواهhis passion طَموحاsoaring
Never will you sway a headstrong lover with reproach,
In vain you chide the obdurate,
or lower a gaze that soars with his passion.
Or bid a roving eye forbear:
ألِفَتْhave grown accustomed to جوارحُهُhis limbs الضّنىwasting sickness وجفونُهand his eyelids
بُعْدَthe absence of الكَرىsleep وفؤادُهand his heart التّبريحاtorment
His limbs have grown accustomed to wasting sickness, and his eyelids
Long since those eyelids learnt to frown,
to the absence of sleep, and his heart to torment.
Those cheeks to mock the trickling tear.
ياO مُهدياًone who sends نحويtoward me الملامةَreproach إنماonly
أهديتَyou have sent نحوtoward الجَمرِthe embers منهاfrom it الرّيحاthe wind
O you who send reproach my way, you have only
Away! Your chiding but provokes
sent its wind toward the embers.
A breast that spurns the idle breath;
إنif كنتَyou are تجهلُunaware of ماwhat لقيتُI have suffered فسَلْthen ask بهabout it
جَفنيmy eyelid القريحَwounded ودمعيَand my tears المَسْفوحاpoured forth
If you do not know what I have suffered, ask these about it:
Nay ask these sleepless eyes that weep
my wounded eyelid and my streaming tears.
My long, long vigil, and my death.
