مدحُكَpraising you أدنىthe least حقّdue نَعمائكْyour favors
علىupon مواليكَyour allies وأعدائكْand your enemies
Praising you is the least due for your favors
Praising you is the least right of your blessings
To your allies and your enemies.
Upon your allies and enemies

Were it asked, “What is generosity?” people would say,
If it were asked what is generosity, the people would say

لاno فضلَcredit للشاعرِfor the poet فيin مدحِهhis praise
وإنماand only الفضلُthe credit لآلائكْto your bounties
The poet deserves no credit for his praise;
There is no merit for the poet in his praise
And the credit belongs only to your bounties.
Rather, all merit belongs to your graces
