إنيindeed I أبثُّكَconfide to you حاليmy condition
وماand what عليّI owe وماليand what I own
I confide my plight to you,
I confide in you my state,
and what I owe and what I own.
And care not what befalls me.
عليّI owe دينٌa debt وماليand I have no
شيءُanything سوىexcept آماليmy hopes
I owe a debt, and I have
I have but faith and hope,
nothing but my hopes.
Naught else but my ambitions.
فكيفَso how تفرحُrejoices نفسيmy soul
أمor كيفَhow ينعُمُis at ease باليmy mind
How, then, can my soul rejoice,
How can my soul rejoice,
or how can my mind be at ease?
Or how can I live in comfort,
وقدand indeed شكوتُI have complained of زمانيmy times
إليكَto you ياO ذاpossessor of المَعاليlofty virtues
And I have complained of my times
When I've complained of my times
to you, O man of lofty virtues.
To you, O Lord of Greatness.
فإنْso if تفضلتَyou show favor فالفضthen generosity (word continued)
لُ(completes 'generosity') شيمةُthe nature of المِفْضالِthe generous man
So if you show favor, then generosity
If you would show me favour,
is the generous man's nature.
Generosity is the mark of nobility.
وإنand if أبيتَyou refuse وهذاand this
لاno شكّdoubt عينُthe very essence of المُحالِimpossibility
And if you refuse—and this
But if you refuse, surely
is surely the very essence of impossibility—
Impossibility is clear.
فإننيthen indeed I الآنnow أمضيI go

ممزَّقَtattered السِرْبالِthe robe
then I shall now go,
For now I go on,
with my robe in tatters.
With tattered robe.
فعجلَنْso do hasten ليfor me جاريmy stipend
منعّماًbestowing comfort فيin الحالِthe present moment
So hasten my stipend to me,
So hurry to me a servant,
graciously, at once.
Blessed in the moment.
ولستُand I am not أدفعُI am put off عنهُfrom it
إذاًthen بقيلٍwith 'it was said' وقالِand 'he said'

Nor will I be put off from it
I will not ward him off,
then, by hearsay and idle talk.
With talk or words.
فجُدْso be generous عليّto me بشِعْريfor my poetry
أوor خِدمتيmy service أوor سؤاليmy request
So be generous to me for my poetry,
So favour me, by my poetry,
or my service, or my plea.
Or service, or request.

O Hafiz al-Din, O you
O keeper of faith, O you

Who wears the cloak of glory,

وقيتْmay you be protected عينَthe evil eye of الكَمالِperfection
for God's sake, give to me swiftly—
By God, make haste for me,
may you be shielded from the evil eye that perfection draws.
And spare me from perfection.
