The beloved departed, and patience and fortitude departed.

And left the body a fire whose heat is anguish.

How can one forget loved ones—woe to you all—

At departure, when grief has worn my heart away?

God be praised for a graceful maiden who has gathered

Of lovely qualities more than can be counted.

    With her eye she captured lions, submissive;

And it is no wonder that lions submit to her.

On her neck is gold; in her mouth, cool, gleaming teeth.

In her gaze are swords; in her saliva, honey.

Her waist is frail; her buttocks are full.

And people, since times long past, have testified for her:

That all lovely qualities have been gathered in you,

And a fire burns in your enemies' hearts.

If faultfinders blame me for my love of you, indeed

They have truly strayed from truth and denied guidance.

    Had they seen you—by God—rising

Like the full moon above a supple bough, they would have prostrated themselves.

When her pale camels set out, walking slowly,

I cried in burning anguish: Is there anyone among mankind

Who will shelter me from love of her? For in my liver

Is a fire of longing that the liver cannot endure.

O master of tradition, learned scholar, imam, and you

On whom, after the Lord of the Throne, reliance is placed,

You are the one whom no one equals or resembles

In appearance or character, among all mankind.

    For you are a sea to whoever comes seeking bounty;

And you are a full moon—and among enemies, a lion.

By God, if all the people of the earth sought

An equal to him throughout this age, they would find none.

How noble he is—openhanded, eloquent, discerning—

Above him the banners of bounty are fastened.

He transmits the chosen Prophet's traditions; thus he has

Authentic oral reception of them, graced by the chain of transmission.

It is established for me and for all people

That he is peerless in the sciences of sacred law.

He cares for us as a child is cared for

By a compassionate father, and he fulfills what he promises.

And we care nothing, so long as near

To us is his bounty, though all mankind be far away.

O you whose favors come in succession—none denies them

Except people who have denied God's bounty.

Rejoice: the Deaf Month has arrived, and

The Lord of the heights, the Eternal Refuge, has guarded you from death's blows.

And take her, a graceful virgin, brought to you by

Nasr, and you alone among mankind are his support.

And stay safe, and live in lasting bliss forever,

And in blessings that have neither limit nor number,

As long as lightning flashes and a collared dove laments,

And as long as a star appears, blazing in the dark of night.

May you remain thus in bliss without an end,

May you live a thousand years, and may no hand rise above you.
