O my protector from the turns of an age that has humbled me,

And my loftiest support and my arrow that wins the highest share,

I am at the door, complaining to you of what befell me,

And what has now descended upon me.

O learned scholar, I have no ink,

And my being occupied is preferable to idleness.

And I, by the Station, the House, and the Corner,

Swear an oath, by Zamzam and the place of prayer:

No one among these people takes heed

Of me now, when I come to him, except

The eye of Your Eminence, O Hafiz, learned scholar,

Who has never said 'No' to a seeker of bounty.

So grant me bounty, stay safe, and live on as long as night darkens

Over one endowed with insight, and then grows clear.
