He [apparently: sang], and not one man present remained
My eyes, no man remains in their presence,
who did not wish he could drink a sleeping draught [probable reading],
But for he wishes, were he struck down, to sleep.

لكن لكي يسكرَ أو يرْقُدا
not out of delight in him, nor out of lightheartedness,
Not from joy in them, or from their airiness,
but so that he might become drunk or fall asleep.
But only so he may get drunk or rest.
