Their dwellings at al-Aqiq lie in ruins;
They have meadows in al-Aqeeq left behind,
They stand deserted, while lovers' hearts remain inhabited.
While the hearts of lovers are ruins.

Dwellings—no days of youth return to me
Abodes where the days of youth shall not return to me,
There, nor, after parting, do the young oryx.
Nor after separation, however harsh.

So shall I one day behold my loved ones?
Shall I ever see my beloved again?

A watchman over it, or a companion in night-long conversation.
I were their guard or chatting companion.

And in the pink rose petals, a sorcerer,
And lovers have no bane but those who bewitch.
And the bane of lovers is none but sorcerers.

Shy, he hunts the heart in the very moment of his flight;
An aloofness that ensnares the heart when it's aloof,
Oh, the wonder of a hunter who himself flees!
How strange is the hunter yet itself aloof!

In beauty, all sights have become his exclusive preserve.
Its perfection has made all other views obsolete.

His glances have shattered the lions of the lair;
His piercing glance did break the lions in their dens,
Thus everyone with languid, broken glances is a breaker.
Thus all the broken-hearted are heart-breakers.

Though it was a specter that sometimes visited my abode.

We rode on an easy ride to Dhummar,
Whose ceaseless progress lays the deserts waste.
Crossing the sands in steady pace.

And none but the risk-taker will attain his aims.
For goals are not met except through adventure.
