واعتاضَها من صُبحهِ المتنفّسِ
Had he wished, he would have moistened with it the hems of black night,
If only he had adorned it with the skirts of Hindustan
and taken it in exchange for his breathing dawn.
And fragranced it with the scent of his sigh at dawn,

But he denied passion and feared that
But he denied love and feared that the tongue of the goblet
the tongue of the cups might whisper of it to you.
Would reveal it to you - so keep its helplessness with you,

So hold their reins in check beside you; enough for him is
For it is enough for him that his overflowing tears
an eye whose tears' rein has not been checked.
Were not contained, like a loosened bridle.

أوَ لستَ تسمعُ بالنهارِ المُشمِسِ
There is kinship between heady wine and the countenance;
There is a link between the living and the dead,
and have you not heard of the sunlit day?
Do you not hear it in the bright daylight?

I reminded him of the days of old, yet I only
I remembered the olden days, and yet
reminded him of the days of old—he had not forgotten.
I remembered the olden days and did not forget.

An age whose morning and evening seemed
It was an age whose morning and evening
to vie over the features of one with cool, sweet teeth and dusky lips.
Vied over the attributes of a hare-lipped elf.

The anemone slapped its cheek over it,
Sorrow slapped his cheek
and the narcissus's eye poured forth tears of dew,
And a narcissus tear flowed from his eye.

until, when the stars of its perfection set
Until the stars of his perfection set
and the dawn of its cups was wrapped in black night,
And the cups of his morning melted into Hindustan,

keep passion alive; for if you weep, then
Keep up love, for if you cry,
these tears are but the bubbles of those cups.
These tears are the bubbles of those goblets.

And indeed, you have struck the flints of longing that has so often
And you have often ignited a spark of yearning
kindled the sparks of the gushing tear duct.
That kindled the glowing embers of weeping eyes,
