You were veiled; I had not thought the full moon's radiance could be veiled,
You vanished and I did not think that the full moon would vanish
nor imagined it setting in the depths of the earth.
Nor that it would set into the belly of the earth and disappear

You bequeathed your palm's generosity to my eye, and it began
And your bountiful hands made my eyes inherit weeping
gushing with the clouds' rainstorms and pouring forth.
That pours with the wisps of clouds and spills over

The full moon in heaven reminds me of its namesake;
The full moon in the sky reminds me of his beauty
so here I am, watching every full moon and keeping vigil.
So here I am, observing every full moon and watching

And since the stars chose to impose their decree upon you,
And since the stars chose your rule over them
I turned away; my eyelids no longer watch a star.
I rove, no star is observed by my eyelids

They say the stars in the heart of heaven
They say that the shooting stars in the firmament of the sky
have a Lion that slays humankind, and a Scorpion.
Have a lion that preys on people, and a scorpion

Let the Lion of the horizon prey upon humankind;
Leave the horizontal lion to savage people
and let the Scorpion of the spheres rob creation.
And leave the scorpion of the spheres to rob creation

For you I feared calamity before its time,
I feared adversity before its time because of you
and dreaded time's misfortune while it was still unseen.
And was wary of the turning of fate while it was absent

I could not count your gifts in my palm, so abundant were they;
And I did not consider my palms receiving you plentiful
but dreaded death was what I kept reckoning with.
But I was calculating the feared misfortune

For whom will thought devise a fresh praise-poem after you,
Whoever composes a new eulogy after you
silvering and gilding its words?
Babbles emptily in its phrases and rambles

In whom shall we place hope after your door? Indeed, it
Whoever we hope will give freely after your door
is a dependable, proven door for the bestowal of bounty.
It is truly a generous, proven door

To whom shall seekers of bounty turn, after favors
Whoever cherishes the noble after your noble deeds
knowing what you seek and ask for?
Those noble deeds they strive for and seek

To noble character and fidelity, after you,
Peace be upon the nobility of character after you
a farewell fair as a garden's face—and the garden is delightful.
Like the face of a meadow, and the meadow is admired

Secret alms passed away after you and came to an end;
The secret charities after you have passed and vanished
alas for the secret that departs with the breast!
Oh what a pity for the secret that vanishes in the chest

The splendor of letters has gone after shining so clearly,
The glamour of etiquette after its clarity is gone
and that cultured presence has been hidden away.
And that well-mannered spectacle is hidden

Ah, in God's path lies a dweller in a grave's niche,
Verily in the cause of God lies one in a grave
while his qualities on earth are dictated and written down.
And his traits in the earth dictate and inscribe

A young man whose lineage and character were noble;
A noble youth, his lineage and nature ennobled
so his beneficence was both his inheritance and his own attainment.
So his virtues are inherited wealth and gains

His praise traveled by night, never outpaced—and how could it not,
Exclusive glory spreads his praise, how not
when his ambergris is pale gray in the breeze of remembrance?
And his sweet fragrance in the mention is most fragrant

Who, then, will tell Shayban, on the day of the departure
So who will convey to Shayban when you traveled
of his glory, that the horizon is gray-haired with stars?
That the horizon with shooting stars is made white

And that the children of hope now lack care,
And that the sons of hopes without your shepherding

Are destitute, no mother or father is there

We lost you like the loss of spring so our time
is Jumada, and the honored giver sought for bounty is gone.
Is bleak, and the blossoming month has departed

A man of letters, amid noble deeds and piety,
A brother of cultivation, honor and piety
striving and laboring for honor in both abodes.
Seeking the nobility of the two abodes and striving

Had his radiant favors not showered upon us, we would have been drenched
If we had not found your bounties sufficient we bewailed
through the grace of his prayer, by a pouring deluge of rain.
By your prayer's grace and the pouring rain's flood

He passed to where every blameworthy trait keeps far from him,
You passed away where every blemish is far
and his deeds bring him near through righteousness.
And your deeds draw near in righteousness

His days were Badr-like; they were not harmed
And your days are like full moons, no waxing fortunes
by the sudden impulses of what you undertake and what you avoid.
That come and go can harm them

In them the soul struggles and life is possible
and the glitter of this life is something beloved.
And this life's splendor is a thing beloved

May God curse a worldly life that is not a mount
God has made a world that cannot be a passage
for reaching the next life, bridled and ridden.
To the attainment of the next, coveting and riding

I marvel at one who hopes for divine approval while negligent;
I wonder at one who hopes for approval yet neglects
and our procrastination despite that knowledge is more astonishing.
While our procrastination, knowing that, is more wondrous

وأجْدِرْand how likely بهاfor them تقضيto end قريباًsoon وتقضبand be cut short

These days are nothing but stages of a journey,
These days are nothing but stages
and how likely they are to end soon and be cut short!
And it is best to finish them soon and pluck them
إنif كانتare الأنفاسُbreaths للعمرِfor life كالخُطَاlike footsteps

If breaths are to life as footsteps,
If breaths are steps toward life
then the end is easier to reach, and nearer.
Then the distance is closer and nearer

may the unceasing downpour water your memory, for so often
Your era watered the parched valley, so it has long
a ceaseless rainstorm of your bounty watered us.
Quenched our thirst, pouring from your attainment

Nor may the hands of misfortune sheathe their keen blade,
And the swords of misfortune have not sheathed
for there is nothing desirable in life after your death.
For after your death, life is undesirable
