تركت للفظ الحاجبيّة رونقاً

له لا لألفاظ الأوائل تقبل

You have left the wording of al-Ḥājibiyya with a lustre,

I left the rhyming prose a special charm

For which—not for the words of the predecessors—it is accepted.

Acceptance it has, not the words of old

إذا كتب النحو اسْتمالت عيوننا

إذا كتب النحو اسْتمالت عيوننا

أبينا وقلنا الحاجبيّة أول

أبينا وقلنا الحاجبيّة أول

When grammar books entice our eyes,

When grammar was written, it drew our eyes

We refuse and say, “Al-Ḥājibiyya comes first.”
